For the past three years we have been conducting separate retreat days for men suffering from a past abortion for 3 years now. It has been a challenge reaching men and getting them to come forward.
We’ve had up to 10 men, and other times have had to cancel the day.
Abortion has been confusing for men…the "my body , my choice" mentality has left them feeling as though they have no right to object to abortion, when in fact it is their child as well. Add to that the often confusing message of having let a woman make the choice and then have her upset with you for allowing her to abort…it seems a no win situation.
Then of course, there are those men who pressure women to abort…or those married to someone post abortive.
The issue of men and abortion is just beginning to come to the forefront. Vicki Thorn and the KOC just hosted a conference on men and abortion in San Francisco http://www.menandabortion.info/ and more and men are coming forward to speak of their pain.
We at Lumina actually served more men than I thought in 2007…not all came to our retreats but some were referred for individual counseling anyway…I found this statute on the web and thought how wonderful it would be for the men’s ministry.
