An Invitation to Pray for Our Nation
Since the founding days of our nation, prayer from leaders
and citizens of all faiths has played an important role in
American history. This year, the National Day of Prayer is
on Thursday, May 7th. It is a non-denominational invitation
for people to pray according to their own faiths and
traditions for the nation and its citizens.
Here is a timeline of the day's evolution from the early
days of our nation's formation to today:
* In 1775, the Continental Congress issued a day of prayer
to set aside time for prayer “in forming a new nation,”
* In 1798, President John Adams declared May 9 a day of
“humiliation, fasting and prayer,” and asked Americans
of all faiths to pray that this nation be protected from
“all the dangers which threaten it,”
* In 1952, President Harry Truman signed a joint
Congressional resolution into law regarding an annual day
of prayer,
* In 1988, President Ronald Reagan decreed that the
National Day of Prayer be held annually on the first
Thursday of May,
* In 2009, Thursday, May 7th marks the 58th annual
National Day of Prayer.
This Thursday people of all faiths will pray for America,
its people, its leaders and its direction. Abortion and the
politics of motherhood have created a divisive climate in
virtually every sector of our society. The perception that
there are two "sides" is often part of the rhetoric that
closes hearts, minds and doors.
On the 7th, if you are participating individually or as a
group, formally or informally … this is a good day to
remember in your prayers the many individuals and families
hurt by pregnancy- and abortion-related issues, and related
deceptions, betrayals, abuses, injustices and heartbreak.
Pray also that all of us will respond to the needs and rise
to the challenge of creating a more authentically pro-woman,
pro-life and pro-family culture.
Pray for the leaders and communicators that they will
present this issue in a human rights context as a profound
injustice, abuse, risk and heartbreak to everyone involved.
