I personally believe all crimes are "hate" crimes and so have an issues with the new bill passed today. Seems to me all these attempts to separate actions bring more attention to differences instead of addressing the fact that there are already laws in place for any crime. What crime is not a hate crime.
My son got tortured as a kid because he had red hair…how about those who wear glasses…kids from single parent homes…when is it not a hate crime??? Makes no sense to me. Still, I was also thinking after reading this, I wonder if it
could be used against people who pressure parents to abort a child in
utero especially because of a perceived disability…
The Senate passed The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr Hate Crimes
Prevention Act yesterday on a 68 to 29 vote. The bill extends the
definition of federal hate crimes to include attacks motivated by sex,
sexual orientation, gender identity, and disability. President Obama is
expected to sign the bill into law, the New York Times reports. The bill passed in the House on October 8 with a vote of 281 to 146.
