From today's reading from Romans:
For in hope we were saved.
Now hope that sees for itself is not hope.
For who hopes for what one sees?
But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait with endurance.
I got a letter the other day from a former spiritual director of mine who has been living in a different part of the country. In it he addressed suffering I had spoken to him about. He reminded me that we all far too often see our blessings as the good things while dismissing the suffering as worthless, when in fact, our suffering is just as much of a gift from God.
In our human nature we tend to want to "see"…but as the reading above states, that is not hope…it is in hoping without seeing, even in, especially in in the midst of our suffering that we are saved….
