Abortion: A Personal Story

My child would have been one year old by now…
Only a small handful of people know about this, but I figured that
it was time to open up about it if only because if it seems that I
become more downbeat everytime around Christmas/New Years, the reason
wouldn’t be a mystery.
Back in the spring of 2008, I became intimate with a former (unnamed
for privacy) girlfriend and she became pregnant. She told me about it
and admittedly, and although I wasn’t excited, I wasn’t unhappy,
either. She read my initial shock about it as displeasure, however, and
quickly began making assumptions that I would abandon her and the baby,
and that she couldn’t raise a child alone. She then began talking about
how having a child would cramp her going to school and she would lose
her social life. I was trying to give her alternatives, including just
letting me raise it, or adoption. Being adopted myself, I know that
there are tons of couples out there who cannot have their own children
and would adopt in a heartbeat. She continued to blame me for putting
her in the mess that she was in, although I believe she was beginning
to warm to the idea of adoption. Then, after a number of weeks of
talking normal and discussing the matter further, she had informed me
that she had an abortion. She had one privately, without telling me,
and told me after the fact.
