Jill Stanek http://www.jillstanek.com has a post today on a new book ,"Confessions of an Ex- Feminist" by Lorraine Murray. It reminds me a lot of my own story. It is amazing how God often uses our worse sins as the means to bring us back to Him.I have always felt it is my aborted son Joshua, from his perch in heaven, who truly taught me what love is and brought me to the Lord.
While the understanding of the impact of abortion has gotten better, there are still many out there who lack an understanding of why women abort. Also, why some feel the loss and know it is wrong right away, while others seem to move merrily on their way.
Many times it takes years for someone to acknowledge the impact abortion has had on them. So many factors play into it, from guilt and shame,to the fear of coming forward, to the need to keep rationalizing the decision because to face what they actually did would be unbearable. especially if they have no relationship with God. Who could look at such a horrific thing without knowing of God's infinite love and mercy for them?
At Lumina we have had women call in their 80's and 90's, finally wanting to address an abortion they had decades before. Think of that, 60 years of denial finally coming to the surface.
Society is still trying to tell women abortion is a quick fix and unfortunately ,many women still believe that, although it is changing because of the fallout of the last 37 years. We all know personally the pain of someone who has had an abortion. The women and the men however are the tip of the iceberg. Countless people are impacted by even one abortion, siblings, grandparents, friends, the list goes on and on. This is one of the things we attempt to bring forward in our "Afternoon of Prayerful Remembrance" service. http://netny.net/currents/video/stories/healing-abortions-wounds-12210/
It is good to see so many books/films etc coming out about abortions impact. As these women courageously come forward in the face of often harsh condemnation and judgment, I pray all remember, each of us is in need of God's love and mercy. No one can make up for abortion, but the truth is, we do not have to because Jesus Christ already has…
Looking forward to reading this book. Here is an exerpt:
Murray then movingly tells readers the story of the abortion she'd had
years before. "No one," she writes, "had prepared me for the
flashbacks, which began about a year after the 'procedure'….I would
relive the experience….I started having upsetting reactions to
babies….A question started plaguing me: How old would my baby have
been now?"
One night, her husband, Jef, encouraged her to attend an Advent penance
service, where confessions would be heard. It had been years since
she'd been to confession, but reluctantly, she went. With tears
streaming down her face, this former feminist and long-time defender of
abortion told the priest what she'd done. He explained that just as
Jesus had said on the cross, "Father, forgive them; for they know not
what they do" (Luke 23:34), Jesus would forgive her, too.
