"It's going to be
very, very important to keep an eye on how this series is treated by NBC and
whether it garners protests, because Becky's abortion will really be momentous
if it gets depicted on a major network."
So writes Sarah Seltzer of RH Reality Check http://www.rhrealitycheck.org about an episode of "Friday Night Lights" where the character Becky, a 10th grader, gets pregnant and has an abortion.
Seltzer is concerned once the show moves from Direct TV back to NBC the abortion plot will be "softened". What the heck does that mean? And what this about it being "momentous" if it gets depicted on a major network? My guess is they are referring to abortion being de stigmatized, something they have been shooting for for a long time.
I wonder,is Seltzer ready to show the entire truth..what if Becky , like countless other women/girls who have had abortions becomes depressed, or suicidal, or filled with guilt, grief and shame, like so many of us were/are? What if she is sorry she killed her baby?…but no, I do not think that is what Seltzer is shooting for. She wants to show Becky made the right decision, that "anti choicers" are crazy for not wanting babies killed, and that Becky goes merrily on with her life with no consequences. Good luck.
I found one particular sequence of dialog from the show was very disturbing. As Becky, whose mom had her as a teenager, is deciding to have an abortion she says;"It's just really obvious that
my mom wants me to have this abortion because I was her mistake and she has
just struggled and hurt and everyday she wanted better." Is it surprising that someone who is brought up to think they were a "mistake" and ruined their moms life would opt for abortion. Sadly, the truth is many teenagers now a days feel that way . Perhaps that is the real problem.
