“To us proud as we are,
the response of Jesus could have closed us totally to Him. We would have been
disposed to defend our honor at all costs. The Canaanite woman reacted in a
completely different way. She does not claim her rights, but in profound humility,
she decided to act with an unlimited trust that flows from an authentic
recognition of her nothingness and helplessness.
O woman, great is your
faith!” These words of Jesus express His admiration for this attitude. Because
of this, He fulfills the petition of the Canaanite woman…you should neither
lose heart nor be discouraged by the apparent absence of God’s response to your
supplication. While recognizing before God the truth about yourself, don’t stop
begging Him.
If God refuses…He does
so for your own salvation; He wants your faith to be at a point of folly and
unlimited trust.” (In the Arms of Mary-pg 98-99)
Ok…a
show if hands…
How many of you believe Jesus loves
you?
How many of you trust Jesus?
So, what do you have to worry
about?
The truth is, we trust up to a certain point. When we are
down and out and our way does not work, we trust because we are desperate.
After a while, our pride seeps in again and we start to believe we are the ones
working things out and we begin once again to trust more in ourselves then Him.
Especially if we are not getting what we want or what we think is best for us!
I think our entire lives are spent in constantly finding out we have taken over
again and handing ourselves back to Him. It is just so easy for our pride to
take over without us even recognizing it.
The Canaanite woman begged Jesus
for her daughters healing… He rejects her, or so it seems, and worse yet He
called her a dog! He confronts her with her nothingness
But, she does not let her pride get
in the way…she acknowledges she is like a dog but reminds Him”even a dog eats
the scraps from the masters table!”
She appealed to his goodness
She not only trusted Him to do what
she wanted and believed He could do, she challenged Him!
She made it impossible for Him to
say no to her and still be who He claimed to be!
We could almost say, she called his
bluff!
What was it that caused her to have
such faith? Was it that she had seen other healings?
Was she just so desperate for her
daughters healing and felt she had nothing to loose?
We don’t really know, but I do know what caused me to beg.
I was desperate and immersed in my
misery
You have all heard me say that during my healing, I begged
Jesus
I begged because I knew I could not do it…I persisted
because without God I had no hope. I knew He was my last chance.
I certainly fell over and over again…I had no clue about
Jesus or his love. I was learning for the 1st time.
I had major abandonment issues because of my abortion
I wanted to be loved but I felt unlovable, and I dare say I
had no idea of what true love was, only self love. Feelings/failures of others
reflected on me
Looked to others for love and acceptance instead of Jesus-
because they were incapable of loving I felt unlovable! And I was not able to
love them either because I did not know how. Jesus and Joshua had to teach me
how.
There is a constant danger and a call to remember, as they
say “where you came from”
I often see people begin to think
it is them instead of Gods mercy. They hated to be judged but then they judge
others. They believe they can end abortion now instead of attributing it all to
God…a constant danger for all of us …to stay humble and remember how the
mercy we were shown we are called to show to others…even those in NARAL and
NOW…even those instrumental in our abortions
We are called, like the Canaanite women to believe in His
love in spite of what you see or feel
In healing from abortion it takes that kind of trust
A complete vulnerability to God…a surrender to allow Him to
touch us
If God refuses…He does
so for your own salvation; He wants your faith to be at a point of folly and
unlimited trust.”
Folly: unreason:
thoughtlessness, recklessness, or thoughtless or reckless behavior
– irrational thing: a thoughtless or reckless act or idea
For sure…many of
the saints probably were seen as nuts because of their faith, their “folly”
For St. Alphonsus, God's very nature is an outpouring of
love. God has gone out of himself to the point of folly in order to make
himself lovable to us. This self-outpouring of God erupts into history in Jesus
Christ and is evident for Alphonsus in a special way in the Incarnation, the
Passion and the Eucharist. "The very words Crib, Cross, Sacrament, should
make our hearts thrill with joy," says Alphonsus. In the Crib we see
infinite power become weak for us; in the Passion, we see a God who shares our
life in everything even in the desolation of death; in the Eucharist we see a
God who lives among us forever as providing nourishment for our journey. (Heritage
Prayer, 74)
Let us trust God to the point of folly..it is there we will find healing.
