One of the best parts of the Lenten season is the call to
come home to Christ and the Church. I remember the fear I would feel when I heard
this…I always thought there was no coming home for me because of my abortion.
A lot of groups out there make it seem like there is no
forgiveness in the church. They play on the emotions we may already be feeling,
telling us that the church is judgmental, unforgiving, and one of the reasons why we feel so
badly about our abortions to begin with, but this is so far from what is actually true.
First of all, if we are honest with ourselves we would admit
we feel badly, not because the church has said abortion is wrong, but because
we know in our hearts abortion is wrong. In fact, it is most often the church
that helps us to heal from the guilt, shame and grief that we are feeling as a
result of abortion. The church does not lay in wait to condemn us, but to bring
us back to the peace of Christ.
While the church may say abortion is wrong because it takes the
life of an unborn child, she has also been in the forefront of post abortion
healing for the past 25 years, and she continues to reach out to those hurting from
a past abortion through programs such as Project Rachel http://www.hopeafterabortion.com/
,and ministries like “Entering Canaan” http://sistersoflife.org/hope-and-healing-after-abortion
and Rachel’s Vineyard www.rachelsvineyard.org
If
you are away from the church because of a past abortion, do not let them tell
you the church instilled your guilt. Do not let them imply you are unable to return,or that you are unwanted. the church is waiting to welcome you back to the
merciful love of God. ..I know, I have been there!
