More on the subway ads

It is amazing to me how so many who claim abortion left them fine are so upset about these ads…

Editorial: Falsely neutral ad is misleading, not helpful

The world is full of advertisements that try to tell you what to do.
They stare you in the face and attempt to convince you to change your
worldview or opinions. For the past few months, an abortion ad in New
York City has been doing exactly that. But the site doesn’t back up the
message that it is trying to send.

The campaign states that “abortion changes you.” It doesn’t say for
better or worse. Abortion changes you how? Well, according to The New
York Times, the founder of the Web site, Michaelene Fredenburg, said
“We feel it’s really important for women and their families to have a
safe place to experience their own range of emotions, apart from the
controversy and debate.” The advertisement seems straightforward
enough. It also seems like an earth-shattering idea to have an ad that
is neutral when abortion is an issue that is usually overwhelmed by
radical views.

But the Web site only tells stories of women who felt shame or guilt
after undergoing an abortion. That hardly seems neutral. The group has
also collaborated with anti-abortionist groups that have a clear
agenda. In a world where abortion and the right to choose are such
seriously debated topics, people should have access to education about
it. The last thing that United States citizens need is an ad that
claims to educate, but really is trying to prevent people from getting
abortions. Abortionchangesyou.com should admit that they have an agenda
and they should stop trying to trick people into thinking that the Web
site is purely educational.

Not all people feel remorse or shame after getting an abortion. Some
people undergo the procedure because it is medically the right choice
for them. There should not be judgment that everyone experiences the
same emotion. It is unjust and simply incorrect to make that
generalization. The organization either needs to use neutral,
educational material in its ad or it needs to admit that it is trying
to reduce the number of abortions through the messages on the Web site.
The view isn’t even subtle – the organization offers religious
opportunities for those that are seeking help about the issue.
