Anna Chapman, the suspected Russian spy, confided to her British
former husband just weeks before her arrest that she deeply regretted a
decision to abort their baby so she could pursue her career.

In
an email to Alex Chapman, she said she had "suffered a lot" after
"killing our baby" when she had become pregnant in 2005. Referring to
her former husband by the pet name "Banjiki" – Russian for baby boy –
she told how she was trying to forge a new life for herself, adding:
"It's never too late to be happy and to succeed."

Mrs
Chapman, 28, who was arrested in the United States last weekend as part
of an 11-strong suspected spying ring, was married to public
school-educated Mr Chapman for four years before they divorced in 2006.
But the couple remained close friends and were in regular phone and
email contact.
