Even after over 15 of doing post abortive work, I am still stunned by the badge of many proudly worn, who have had abortions who proclaim, "My abortion did not bother me."
They seem to make the implication that those of us who suffer because of our abortions have something wrong with them, and are lesser people, weak. Personally, I am so grateful my abortion bothered me..I would never want to be able to take the life of my child and not have it bother me.
One of those women were at a talk I gave at the College of Staten Island yesterday. As much as her abortion did not bother her, I wondered why she bothered to come. She was obviously agitated throughout the program. These women do not want to hear our stories. It takes a lot of energy to rationalize and hearing of the destruction of abortion, not only on the unborn but on moms and dads, siblings, friends etc, makes them very uncomfortable and harder to keep justifying. After all, abortion is suppose to be a fix all.
I am sure this woman did not truly want her abortion, no women does. I do not know her circumstances and what caused her to abort but I am sure, no matter how "okay " she claims to be, it was a difficult decision.
I am glad she came to the talk and I pray that she finds peace, for although she says she has it, it was obvious she does not. It took great courage for her to voice what she did and i would like to think that one day, she will be in our ranks sharing her healing from an abortion that did not bother her.
