Lazarus

The-Rich-Man-And-Lazarus-1590-95

I love the story of the poor man Lazarus and the rich man who, although he saw Lazarus’ suffering, did nothing to help him. We are told Lazarus would have been happy with the scraps from the rich man’s table, and yet he received none.

When the rich man dies, he is thrown into a place of torment and begs to have Lazarus come and bring him relief for he sees Lazarus now safe beside Abraham.

He said, 'Then I beg you, father, send him
to my father's house,
for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them,
lest they too come to this place of torment.'

The rich man is convienced that if his brothers are warned they will change their lives and do what is right, but Abraham reminds him that they all had been warned by Moses and the prophets but they did not listen.

The message of life is not a new one. The sanctity of human life is a message that has been proclaimed from the beginning of time by the church. Most of us knew in our hearts before our abortions that it was wrong to have one, but for whatever reason we may have felt we had no "choice".

Obviously, most of us were far from the truth of God when made that decision. Many of us wanted to believe the lie that life would return to the way it was before the pregnancy if we killed our unborn children.

Some women speak of those who are outside of the clinics and believe that if someone was out there before they went in, they would not have aborted. Others saw those outside of clinics and got angry because they were there. In truth, we never know what we would have done if the situation were different.

We are all called to be prophets in this time of great destruction of human life. That does not mean anyone has to be “Silent No More” about their abortions, but it does mean we need to work in some way to protect human life. That may be speaking out, or talking one on one, working in a ministry, or financially supporting a ministry . Only God, through a good spiritual director ,can direct each one in their obligation depending on each life circumstance. Certainly we all can pray to end the attacks against life.

Today pray that you may become a prophet for life in the way God chooses for you.
