China and Us

Here is an article by Kathryn Lopez of National Review on Chinas one child policy and the testimony before Capital Hill by Chai Ling, a student leader and victim of those policies. A great reminder to pray for all the women in China where over 500 comit suicide daily.

China & Us
Abortion is dehumanizing — and not just to the unborn child.

‘As much as I thought I was a freedom fighter trying to bring freedom and save lives,” testified Chai Ling at a recent Capitol Hill hearing, “I did not realize how much I was turned into the same sinful being as Chinese leaders like Deng Xiaoping and others who are enforcing the one-child policy today.”

This jarring admission by a woman who was a student leader in the Tiananmen Square democracy protests of 1989 was made before the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s subcommittee on human rights, in a hearing marking the 31st anniversary of China’s one-child policy. The hearing, chaired by Rep. Chris Smith (R., N.J.), was meant to inspire action on the China Democracy Promotion Act of 2011, which, if passed, will allow the president of the United States to deny visas to officials involved in enforcing that affront to human dignity.

I also happened to come across this article announcing the beginning of a "Post Abortion Care Project" headed by the Family Planning Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, and the Science and Technology Institute under the National Population and Family Planning Commission . I would love to believe this was a good thing, but just the name os who is running it gives me pause.

Saturday saw the co-launch in Beijing by China Women's Development Foundation, the Family Planning Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, and the Science and Technology Institute under the National Population and Family Planning Commission of the Post Abortion Care (PAC) Project.

The project will popularize high-quality PAC clinics around the country that will offer women post-abortion consultation and reproductive health care services. The China Women's Development Foundation, meanwhile, has established the Yiai Fund to support and promote the development of high-quality PAC clinics.

The latest results of 2011 World Contraception Day Research show that about 8 million women resort to abortion every year in China, and that the repeat abortion rate has reached 50%. Repeated abortions do serious harm to women's reproductive health due to the increased risk of complications and sequelae. Data show that women who have had more than three abortions are 34.62 percent more likely to suffer complications.

Member of the Family Planning Branch of the Chinese Medical Association Cheng Linan confirmed that the Association is responsible for building the PAC Project platform and promoting its development. PAC clinics established in different regions provide women with post abortion services, including distributing contraceptives and giving contraception consultations.

China Women's Development Foundation and Bayer HealthCare have co-launched the Yiai Fund, which aims to improve and promote work on women's health in China. As first donor Bayer HealthCare donated 1 million yuan (US$ 156,300) to the Yiai Fund.

Secretary-General of China Women's Development Foundation, Qin Guoying said at the launch ceremony that the Yiai Fund will sponsor PAC clinics in hospitals which will act as a charity platform to improve women's lives.
