Ez 18

Thus says the Lord GOD:
If the wicked man turns away from all the sins he committed,
if he keeps all my statutes and does what is right and just,
he shall surely live, he shall not die.
None of the crimes he committed shall be remembered against him;
he shall live because of the virtue he has practiced.
Do I indeed derive any pleasure from the death of the wicked?
says the Lord GOD.
Do I not rather rejoice when he turns from his evil way
that he may live?

“None of the crimes he committed shall be remembered against him!” what a consoling thought, especially to those of us who tortured ourselves day and night with never forgetting the crime we had committed!

How can this be possible? How can God possibly forget what we have done?

I think I came to a better grasp of this after I had my living kids. Unconditional love.

A love that does not dwell on weaknesses and failings but that believes in and encourages good.

A love that forgives and forgets making it safe to be yourself because you know no matter what, that love will be there to guide you back to safe shores when you have hurt yourself and others through sin. A love that allows you to feel the consequences so you know why your action was wrong, but also supports you in your time of suffering.  A love that calls you to change, and to union with Christ and trusts that He will bring you to Himself.

Many times healing means looking at the way we lived our lives and calling us to change. It is not always easy. Sometimes we need to let go of relationships or places that are unhealthy…we have to care more about offending God than others. We may fall in our attempts at change, but that is ok. We have the sacraments to help us get back on track again…what is important is that we get up and begin again, as Jesus did on the way to Calvary.…

Today, meditate on the unconditional love of God and His forgetfulness of your crimes…and bask in the peace this truth brings you.
