This past Monday, a new attempt (there have been tons of them) was launched by NARAL, Advocates for Youth, Women's Information Network and others, to remove the "stigma" of abortion in what they are calling "story telling" events in which women tell "uplifting" experiences of their abortions. Really?
"Safe, legal, and rare" has been thrown out, as we all knew it would be, to be replaced by "safe, legal, and affordable."
Katie Stack of MTV's "16 and Pregnant" will be one of the "celebrity" spokeswomen as they travel the country and college campuses to "allow stories to be heard." I would bet this does not include stories of suffering and regret. Sadly, this reminds me of the exploitation of women like Norma McCorvey of Roe vs. Wade.
This is probably the most blatant and pathetic act of denial of the aftermath of abortion that I have seen. This is an "if only we can convince the world" type of event, then we can remain in our denial and all will be well. I hate to tell them, but it will never work.
People know abortion is wrong. Millions of women have woken up to the harm of abortion, in not only the obvious aspect of participating in taking the life of your child, but also to the consequences for yourself and those around you. Sadly, many of these young women will learn this truth one day, when the denial disappears and they are left with the truth of what they have done.
Thankfully, there are now many places to go for help in healing. The stigma of abortion does not exist because of outside events, but because abortion is wrong, and always will be no matter how "safe, legal, and affordable" it is.
