Then the eyes of both of them were opened,
and they realized that they were naked;
so they sewed fig leaves together
and made loincloths for themselves.

In today's reading of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, we hear of  Eve seeing the fruit on the tree and eating the apple in despite God telling them not to. She then gives it to Adam to eat as well.

Immediately they are filled with guilt and shame. Ah, the human condition!

We are no different than Adam and Eve.

I cannot help but think of the hope in the lie of abortion that so many men and women experience, even in spite of the fact that they may have been prolife, against abortion., etc. They so desperately want to believe that it is a solution and a good for them, that in spite of anything they know, they go ahead and terminate the pregnancy in the hope that it will solve their "problem" even though they have been warned. We think we know better than God.

Much like Adam and Eve, we are then left with guilt and shame.

Thankfully, the story does not end there. In spite of our unfaithfulness and our selfishness, God desires our healing and our eternal life and so sends His Son into the world for the redemption of our sins.

Lord, Jesus, when we are tempted to believe the world instead of Your word because of our own fear and selfishness, help us to trust and believe in Your love for us, so that we follow your will instead of our own.

Amen
