For I was hungry and you gave me food,
I was thirsty and you gave me drink,
a stranger and you welcomed me,
naked and you clothed me,
ill and you cared for me,
in prison and you visited me.
Then the righteous will answer him and say,
‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you,
or thirsty and give you drink?
When did we see you a stranger and welcome you,
or naked and clothe you?
When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?’
And the king will say to them in reply,
‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did
for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’

When I first sought healing from my abortion over 40 years ago, there was nothing out there. No matter how much I searched, who I went to, or how much I knew my abortion bothered me, there just were no resources.

It took many years before I found a priest who finally listened to my grief and validated my feelings. I knew that there had to be others out there going through the same thing, and so, once I had reached healing, it became a quest for me to let others know they were not alone.

I began writing to Cardinal O'Connor, begging him to address this, and so it was, that when he began the Sisters of Life we began the ministry of Entering Canaan to help those who are suffering because of a past abortion.

One of the great joys I now have, years later, is in seeing so many wonderful ministries available (see sidebar). Although there is still more work and more outreach to do, God has blessed us with many avenues of healing where those who have gone before reach out and pave the way for those suffering.

As we reflect on the charity God asks of us, may we each in some way according to His will, make known His mercy for us and the promise of healing. Amen
