Todays Readings: JON 3:1-10, PS 51:3-4, 12-13, 18-19, LK 11:29-32
"Who knows, God may relent and forgive,
and withhold his blazing wrath,
so that we shall not perish.”
When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way,
he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them;
he did not carry it out.
I have to admit, when I read the readings for today my mind can automatically be brought back to the days when I felt condemned to hell as though the wrath of God was going to come down on me because of my abortion.
I had no concept of the mercy of God, or that I myself was the one who would condemn me because I needed to repent and turn to His mercy and goodness.
So many people nowadays, and probably always, do not understand God's commandments as protections for us. We tend to think of them as rules in place that do not allow us to have any fun. But, in truth, they are there for us to protect ourselves from ourselves.
In the heat of the moment, sin can seem satisfying and even enjoyable, but the truth is, it most often leads to sorrow, sadness, and regret.
Our sexually saturated society promotes happiness where the most likely outcome will be grave harm to ourselves.
Lord help us to trust in you instead of the voice of the secular world, which feeds itself for profit and pleasure with no thought of the harm that comes after. Help us to know your desire is to forgive and free us from our sins as you did the people of Nineveh.
Give us the strength to always follow your commands knowing they are commands of love for us. Amen
