O LORD, we are shamefaced, like our kings,
our princes, and our fathers,
for having sinned against you.
But yours, O Lord, our God, are compassion and forgiveness!
Nowadays we are always hearing about stigma and shame. There is a reluctance to place the cause for the feeling of shame on the act of abortion, but instead blame it on many other things.
In this passage, there is an honesty that is needed in order to heal from abortion…"we are shamefaced…for having sinned against You!" King David, after acknowledging his sins to God, wrote the beautiful Psalms because the mercy of God had touched him. We are filled with "stigma" not because we grew up in a certain religion, or because other people think what we did what was wrong but because we have sinned!
In the Gospel of Life, Blessed Pope John Paul II tells us to look honestly at what we have done and turn ourselves over to the Lord of mercy, to compassion, and forgiveness! It is only in this honesty that He is able to reach the core of our hearts and heal us. May we all trust in His goodness for us and allow His forgiveness into our hearts.
