Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,
whose hope is the LORD.
He is like a tree planted beside the waters
that stretches out its roots to the stream:
It fears not the heat when it comes,
its leaves stay green;
In the year of drought it shows no distress,
but still bears fruit.

When my son Michael was serving in Iraq, I naturally would worry about his safety. I don't think anyone could truly understand what it is like to have a son at war. The world seems to move on while you are stuck in this space of what feels like an unreality. There is not a time that goes by, when you are returning home, or that the doorbell rings that you are not looking to be sure it is not someone from the service bringing you bad news.

Of course, I prayed daily for his safety and the safety of all those serving along with many others. More than once if I expressed my fears, I had people say to me, oh you have to have faith, you are showing a lack of faith by your fear, so many people are praying, you have to trust!

Mike had a good friend he went to boot camp with, Mike Glover. A great guy who came from a family of great faith. Our hearts were shattered when we learned Mike Glover lost his life over in Iraq.

I am sure Mike had just as many people praying for him as my Mike did. Why did he die and my Mike live?  Only God can answer that. What I did learn through it all was that it is not a lack of faith to feel fear, but faith meant trusting in spite of my fear. It meant trusting whether my Mike came home alive or dead .  It meant trusting in God's love for him and his salvation no matter what happened. That is what I was called to do and so was Mike Glover's mom.

Not an easy thing to do but something Mary must have dealt with all the time. Here Jesus was, the Son of God, and yet she had to watch what would appear to be a huge failure and still trust knowing the Father's love for Him.

Lord, when things get tough, and we cannot understand, and all seems lost – when we are in the midst of despair battling abortion's demons, help us to always remember that you are there with us and that faith means trusting in the midst of the darkness. That Your love is never failing love no matter how things appear. Amen
