Reclaiming Our Children: A Blog About Healing After Abortion

Flipping through the channels last night I came upon Extreme Weight Loss, the show about people with large amounts of weight to lose who work with a personal trainer for a year to try to change their lives.

One of the contestants that the trainer Chris Powell is working with this season is a woman named Charita. As she devles into the reasons for her being overweight, she admits she is an emotional eater and attributes it to an abortion that she had in her past. Like countless women, she has kept the abortion a secret from her family.

During the first episode of the show, she decides to free herself from this secret and tell her parents who are Christians, about her abortion ten years prior. She admits there really was no real reason she could not have gone to them when she found herself pregnant except that she was ashamed and decided to handle it herself as many teens do not recognizes the impact it will have on their lives.

You can see her mom begin to cry when she is told, saying something along the lines of, "we do not kill our babies," but both she and the father show unconditional love and support to their daughter as they embrace the knowledge of a lost grandchild.

One thing I did note was that Chris's wife is seven months pregnant, which left me thinking that it must have been such an abortion connector for Charita, but I trust that just by the fact that they allowed the truth they were able to deal with whatever this brought up.

I was really proud of the show for allowing this truth that so many post abortive women experience to be aired instead of denying it or blaming her eating issues on something else and also for allowing the grief and pain of her parents to be seen. It is not a secret to those of us who have been there that abortion manifests itself in addictions, eating disordersm, and a host of other ways.

I tried to pull up the show to post but it is not available yet. I pray many who are suffering in silence  obtain the courage to move forward for healing and I especially pray that Charita is successful in her weight loss and most especially is freed from the bondage of her abortion.
