A Mother Forever
As part of the work of Lumina, the post abortion ministry of Good Counsel, I visit the homes to make the women aware of the resources available to them if they, or someone they know is suffering as a result of a past abortion.
It never fails during these visits that women come forward relieved to share their pain and are grateful that someone finally understands.
Many times, they express a fear that they had thought if Good Counsel found out they had aborted a baby in the past, they would not be welcomed in the homes, and so, they, like so many who are post abortive, carry their pain around in silence and isolation.
They all experience abortion connectors, “people, places or things” that remind them of their abortion experience. Being pregnant is, in and of itself, a major connector. A reminder of the child that is not here. This can be an obstruction in the nurturing of future children because they often feel guilty and unworthy to be a mom. Sometimes, the unresolved feelings keep the women from being emotionally available to their children, and can lead to repeat pregnancies in order to compensate for the child they aborted.
Most of the women, understandably, are not ready to deal with the past abortion. It is enough to meet the challenges of having a child and getting on their feet, but some do seek help even in the midst of their pregnancy.
What is most important, is that they learn they are not crazy for having the feelings that they do, that they are not alone, and that when they are ready, help is available to them. Many express a belief that the child they are now carrying, carries the soul of their aborted child. It is important that they learn the preciousness of each human life that cannot be duplicated. The child they are carrying is a unique gift from God, as was the one who is now "living with the Lord." The fear of being “found out” is put aside after these visits as the women feel safe in the fact that Good Counsel is there for them.
