The Lord our God is Lord alone!
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
with all your soul,
with all your mind,
and with all your strength.
The second is this:
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
There is no other commandment greater than these.”

There are so many ways to look at this reading. I have often thought, we love our neighbors, as we love ourselves. If we do not love ourselves we cannot love our neighbors. Not selfish love, but God’s self giving love.

If we do not have the life of Christ in us and are living sinful lives it will reflect on our relationships with others. We cannot give what we do not have.

We also cannot love God the way we should unless we know Him, and really know His love for us first.  It is through knowing this love that we are then able to grow in love and love Him as we should. Only His love allows us to do this.

Most people who come forward for healing from abortion are filled with self loathing. They cannot even begin to look at their abortion experience until they first begin to know and experience the love of God for them. It is only through the light of trust in that love, often manifested through others, that they feel safe enough to examine such a horrific act. It is the means to heal and to forgive, themselves and others who may have been involved, which then allows them to freely love their neighbor.

May each of us who have experienced the mercy of Christ show that same mercy to others so that they too may love as Christ does.
