The Cry of Nature

When we fail to acknowledge as part of reality the worth of a poor person, a human embryo, a person with disabilities – to offer just a few examples – it becomes difficult to hear the cry of nature itself; everything is connected. Once the human being declares independence from reality and behaves with absolute dominion, the very foundations of our life begin to crumble, for “instead of carrying out his role as a cooperator with God in the work of creation, man sets himself up in place of God and thus ends up provoking a rebellion on the part of nature”. Pope Francis – LAUDATO SI’

Reality is something that is hard to find lately. It seems as if we have made a reality of what we want to be true, instead of what actually is true. We seem to believe if we say something enough it becomes reality. If we don’t go along with this new “reality”, we are called out, as if we are terrible people, but there is only one reality, the truth of Jesus Christ.

Perhaps the most stunning example of this “independence from reality and behavior of absolute dominion”, is the recent video we have all seen regarding the selling of the body parts of babies who have been aborted. We have been horrified by the words of Dr. Deborah Nucatola, the senior director of medical services at Planned Parenthood, who callously speaks of harvesting body parts, getting livers and manipulating babies in the womb to achieve her goals, all while she casually sips her wine and eats her salad during lunch.

The reality of abortion and its collateral damage is almost never addressed in society. We call it many names but rarely what it actually is; the killing of an unborn child. We not only refuse to cooperate with God’s work of creation, we clearly, as Pope Francis says, set ourselves up “in place of God” as sadly, Dr Nucatola has done, as she calmly speaks of tearing an unborn child apart.

But the baby is not the only casualty of this horrific practice. The “rebellion of nature” as a result of abortion, manifests itself in countless women and men who have experienced it. The termination of your own child goes against everything nature intended for a mother and father. We are naturally inclined to be loving and protecting to our offspring. It may take time, perhaps even decades, but the inherent core of who we are as parents and human beings, can never mesh with the true reality of what they have done, the fact that they have participated in the death of their own child.

In spite of numerous attempts over the years to “destigmatize” the abortion event, the very soul of those who have participated in abortion, sooner or later stirs them to reality. The lies of the quick fix of abortion, or it being the solution to a problem or even the statement that it is not a baby, never fully settles, because the true reality is always there, although often buried and hiding in the dark recesses of the soul for years.

Planned Parenthoods gruesome video brought many forward in deep pain. As ironic as it may sound to those who have not been involved in abortion, the thought of their babies being used for research traumatized countless women and men. “How can that be?” you may ask.”They killed their own children.” Yes, that is true, but in waking to the truth of Christ, many of these women and men have now reconciled themselves with God and with their children reclaiming them in a spiritual sense, a God intended now speaking to the truth of what they have done.

The thought of this barbaric act, a new horrific possibility, for many of them in their journey to healing, can bring unrest, terror, sorrow and a feeling once again of being unhealed.

The truth however, is that they are still healed in Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for their salvation. The feelings they are experiencing are appropriate for what they have learned. They are not only normal, but healthy. Acts such as these should bring unrest, terror, and sadness. The foundation of their lives in Jesus Christ which had crumbled through abortion, are now built again and they now hear clearly the “cry of nature” as they weep with it , and with Jesus Christ for the loss of their children and of the sense of reality in our world.
