Talk about abortion connectors! Because it is bringing up a lot of issues for those who have experienced abortion, I need to share some thoughts on the controversy regarding Republican Presidential Candidate, Donald Trump, and his recent comments on punishing women who have had abortions and the subsequent fall out from his words.

First and foremost, I believe the chances of abortion becoming illegal are next to nil except for an act of God. If Roe v. Wade were to be overturned right now, the legality of abortion would go back to the states, so we are pretty much talking about a moot point. Chris Matthews knew that was the case. Too bad Trump didn't just end the questioning right there. Divine mercy post abortion

Secondly, everything I have been reading surrounding this latest Trump controversy is addressing the current situation with women – as if the past 43 years have not occurred and nothing has changed – but I'll get back to that later.

Most prolife statements that have since come out have responded in regard to the impact of Trump's comments on the prolife movement and how his statements set the prolife movement back.  A recurring theme through most of the prolife community's response to Trump's comments is how the prolife movement never condemns women for abortion. I wish that that were true.

Although great strides have been made toward compassion for the postabortive mother, as more and more people are educated about the truth of abortion and the minutia of factors that surround a woman's decision to abort, judgement, nonetheless still exists.  If you need proof, just read the Facebook comments!

The pro-choice side in this recent dust up has cleverly been able to evade the entire truth of abortion by not having to answer questions about the unborn baby in the womb. Just when does life begin? Do they think it is okay to abort an unborn baby at seven or eight months? When would they protect the baby? Instead, Trump's comments have morphed into a political fiasco, demonizing Republicans and completely ignoring the reality of what abortion does.

This brings me back to the past 43 years. So much has changed since the legalization of abortion. We now, and for quite some time, have had a window to the womb allows to see very clear evidence of the development of the baby. We also now know exactly what takes place during an abortion procedure.  The evidence is clear that it is not a "blob" of tissue.  The evidence is clear that abortion ends a human life. Amazingly, however, a great number of people still deny, even with indisputable evidence, the reality of abortion.  For this reason, we need to continue to educate and speak the truth about abortion.

We also know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that abortion harms women, emotionally, spiritually, and often physically.  Abortion has killed women, while it has been legal and when it was not.  Yet, again, there are people out there who deny any negative impact of abortion, despite the ever growing numbers of postabortive women stating otherwise.

I recently previewed the documentary, "Hush," at the Annual Heartbeat International Conference in Atlanta, and listened to an abortionist totally deny negative consequences of abortion. It is crazy that this physician could sit there, in this day and age, and turn a deaf ear to what millions of women are saying.  Sin will do that.

The entire scenario surrounding Trump's recent comments is ridiculous. Speaking about a woman who truly believed what they were aborting was just a blob of tissue in contrast to the knoweldge we have to day writes a completely different story. And I have not even scratched the surface on the circumstances surrounding whjy a woman aborts, the coercion, pressure, circumstances.  This is not to say that abortion is ever okay, but there is much more that needs to be taken into consideration when speaking about punishment for the hypothetical crime of abortion.  Chris Matthews failed to ask what of the fathers who coerced or paid for the abortion?  What about the parents of young girls who offer no other choice but abortion?  Should they be punished?  What about the doctor who performs the abortion? The nurse?  The counselor at the clinic?  Surely the mother won't be the only one who is punished.

It's really impossible to make concrete statements about a situation that probably will never come about.  Even if abortion would become illegal, the dynamics would undoubtedly change as time goes on. But, for the sake of argument…

If abortion were to become illegal and the entire truth about abortion is known; If women are given full disclosure both about their unborn child and the harm that abortion would cause them; If society unequivocally acknowledged the humanity of the unborn; If laws are changed on all levels; If women were not coerced and pressured; if; if; if; if; if… then maybe there would be circumstances where a would should go to jail.  Who knows? I just do not think there is one blanket statement that fits all scenarios.  There are far too many ifs! Chris Matthew's question is ridiculous and so is Trump's answer.  The whole thing is ridiculous!

The one thing I do believe in all of this ridiculousness, is that there can be peace and an end to abortion. Not peace obtained because of science or politics, pro lifers, or pro choicers, but because of changed hearts, one heart at a time; and because God is merciful and Jesus Christ became man to die for our sins, all of our sins, even the sin of abortion.

As we approach Divine Mercy Sunday, instead of wasting time on things that will not be, let us turn our gaze towards Him who is, and the only one who can truly end abortion and heal our world.

One response to “Jail, Trump, and Abortion Connectors”

If we are going to stop the killing of our children, we have to have laws against it and those laws have to have penalties to enforce them. There is just no other way.
We must protect our children from those who know they are committing a crime and those who do not realize they are committing a crime. It makes no sense to argue that if a mother does not know a child is a human being, she should be allowed to kill him/her. If you don’t have laws with penalties, that is exactly the way it would be.
