The Fourth Little Pig – Me!
We’re all familiar with the children’s story of “The Three Little Pigs." They all thought that they were pretty self sufficient. After being sent out to seek their fortune by an old sow, they each went about the business of building their own house, however, pride and stubbornness got the better of a couple of them!
The first made his house of straw. As the tale goes, the wolf came and sought to enter. When the pig refused, he was met with this chant, “I'll puff, and I'll huff, and I'll blow your house in." Blew it in he did, consuming the little pig!
Pig number two did not fare much better having built his house with sticks. Once again the wolf approached, "I'll puff, and I'll huff, and I'll blow your house in." Sadly, the house collapsed and pig number two was added to the menu.
The third little pig was much smarter and built his house with bricks. When the wolf approached with his threats of huffing and puffing, he found that this house would not come down, but he did not give up! He tempted the pig by enticing him with vegetables from the garden thinking he would be able to devour him there. The third a little pig, however, was on to him and went to the garden and back before the wolf showed up. And so the story continues, as the wolf tries various plots to consume the pig. Happily, in the end, the third little pig is the victor, as he sets a trap for the wolf who threatens to reach him by coming down the chimney. Pig number three outsmarts him by placing a pot of boiling water at the base of the chimney which in the end, ends the wolf!
This children’s tale reminds me of my journey to God. I always thought I knew what was best and instead of looking for direction from God, I set out on my own only to have the “wolf” and my own personal weaknesses cause havoc in my life. I often speak of how I built my house on straw and lost everything. It was the only way that God could get my attention. He wanted me to learn that I needed to build my house on the Rock which is Him!
It took much suffering, and many straw houses, before I learned and trusted Him with my life. At times it appeared that I would never survive. He was stripping me of all I thought I held dear, but as I grew to know Him I came to find it was all for my salvation; my road map to Him.
Jesus tells us a story similar to the Three Little Pigs in Matthew 7:23-27…
“Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them
will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.
The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house.
But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock.
And everyone who listens to these words of mine but does not act on them
will be like a fool who built his house on sand.
The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house.
And it collapsed and was completely ruined.”
Which pig are you?
May we each build our houses on the Rock, Jesus Christ, knowing that by doing so, we are safe from the prowling wolf and from our own weaknesses.
