So, in the past few days I have gotten a few emails asking me what I think of the New York Times requesting abortion stories from people around the world. There is no doubt in my mind that their agenda is probably to show the hardship in those countries where abortion is not easily accessible for any reason. Abortion is the "god" they so obviously worship.
As far as sharing our stories, there are all different views about this. My personal view? There is no one answer to this anymore than there is one answer to whether someone should be telling their children about their abortion. Each person needs to carefully discern if they are being called to participate in this request.
Obviously, if you have not had healing, or people, (more importantly your family), do not know about your abortion it would not be a good idea. It will leave you vulnerable and frankly, you have to be secure enough in your healing not to care if you are attacked by those who are pro abortion, which most probably will happen. It is definitely not for everyone, but to say it is for no one is just as untrue. A question for yourself would be, "why am I doing this", have I carefully discerned, or is it about me? and, most importantly, "is it Gods will for me". No one can answer that for you except perhaps a spiritual director who is familiar with you.
Some ministries have come down harshly, saying you should definitely not do this because the NYT is liberal. Does this mean we should never have a voice in the liberal media because they are liberal? Then how are people, who are not exposed to anything but the liberal media suppose to learn the truth of abortion? It is true, the New York Times will not do this with an unbiased approach, and if you think they will you obviously don't know the NYT's, but as much as there may be biblical quotes to support not participating, there are also quotes that encourage it.
- Ephesians 5:11-12 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.
- Psalm 94:16 Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will stand for me against those who practice iniquity?
Hence, in my opinion, there is not one answer to whether an individual should or should not participate, but each individual needs to pray, seek counsel and discern what God is asking of them.
As important as it is for those unhealed not to do it, it is equally important for those who are, to do it if they are called.
Will the NYT will be fair? Of course not, but, as unimportant or improbable as it may seem to some, maybe someone over there who reads our stories will be touched. Maybe even one of those extreme pro aborts who has hidden themselves in rationalization, denial and extremism.
More importantly, maybe someone living in silent suffering may come to learn they are not alone and come forward for healing. If we pray and discern His will for us and not our own, He will take care of the rest.
