Readings: IS 58:1-9a PS 51:3-4, 5-6ab, 18-19 MT 9:14-15
For I acknowledge my offense,
and my sin is before me always:
“Against you only have I sinned,
and done what is evil in your sight.”
R. A heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn.
I wish I had a dollar for every time a person who has had an abortion has said to me "I cannot believe I did that!" I am sure I would be able to retire!
It is as if they were frozen in time, unable to believe their actions once the spring came and they thawed out and realized what they had done. The truth is, we should not be shocked that we sinned. Without God's grace we are each capable of any sin no matter who we are.
It is in acknowledging our sin and recognizing the truth, that we are all sinners, that we can begin to heal because we come to realize our dependence on God. It is then that we begin to look to Him instead of ourselves for healing and guidance. It is then that we come to know the love bought on the cross for our salvation.
Help us oh Lord to recognize we are sinners, but even more than that, help us to trust in Your love for us manifested in Your sacrifice.
Amen
