What is Truth?

“What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.” (John 18:38)

7-Pilate-washing-His-Hands-Baroque-Mattia-PretiThese words spoken by Pontius Pilate reflect the trouble he had in finding Jesus guilty of what was said against Him.  Pilate knew that reality was much different than what the people  would have him believe.  Sadly, he washed his hands of the entire thing, gave in to the people despite  their lies, and allowed Jesus to be crucified even knowing this.

Things are much the same today. In todays’ world it seems that “truth” is ever changing to fit the desires of the person speaking. We even have phrases like it’s my “truth”, a subjective view based on personal experience and feelings.

While we must always respect the feelings and experiences of others and address them with compassion and understanding, in reality there is only one “truth.”

From gender identity to other issues, we are told that we need to accept everyone’s personal truth as our truth. The muted lies give way to people fearing condemnation for not adhering to the politically correct broadcast of “truth.”  No one wants to be labeled bigoted or lacking compassion, and so we tend to bend to the personal truth put forth by others even when we know this truth is not true.

One example of course would be that a man gave birth to a baby. This “truth” is physically impossible, and yet we have magazine headlines proclaiming to the world that a man just had a child. We portray this impossibility as truth. You can  say and be whatever you chose to be , and the rest of the world needs to go along with your illusion or else!

Perhaps one of the places this has been festering for decades, almost 50 years, is in relation to abortion. Blinded by the desire to allow the killing of unborn children, we have denied their humanity and chosen to see pregnancy as one person in order to justify what we want. The “truth” we are fed is “my body my choice”, but in reality, the unborn child has its own separate body deserving of its own life.

The refusal to acknowledge this life, or even worse not to care about it, in order to reach your own end has brought decades of unrest which seemingly will not end anytime soon in spite of laws passed by either side.

We seem to have reached a desperation to keep abortion legal for any time or reason, and yet barely is it mentioned what the truth of abortion is. The reality is always deflected to something besides the fact that innocent unborn babies are killed.

In the end, there is only one TRUTH, objective truth, and no matter how much we all play "pretend" to accommodate the subjective personal truth of others, the real truth will remain the same.

Sadly, until we recognize that and appreciate its value, the world will continue to be confused…call lies the truth all you want, it is still a lie.
